Gabriella is an eternal and restless student, having spent 32 years in Rio de Janeiro building her medical career, which began at the age of 18. After 25 years of professional experience, she has been exclusively focused on the early diagnosis of skin cancer for over 20 years, using Digital Dermatoscopy and Total Body Mapping as tools for monitoring patients at risk for melanoma, especially those with multiple pigmented spots on the skin, along with personal and family medical history.

With a special focus on moles and diagnosis in her profession, but especially attentive to each patient’s unique journey, she considers empathy as the key to her work. Chapter Theme

"MUCH MORE THAN MOLES"

Dermatology, particularly in the context of skin cancer, encompasses a wide range of cases, from early melanoma diagnoses to advanced situations involving various parts of the body such as the scalp, face, arms, legs, back, hands, feet, and mucous membranes. The narrative highlights significant advances in oncology, especially in the treatment of advanced-stage melanomas through Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy, which have provided remission for some patients with metastases in organs such as the lungs and liver. However, these treatments still need to be more accessible within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Dr. Gabriella Campos, the author, shares her experience as a teacher and trainer in oncological dermatology, including her work with digital dermatoscopy and total body mapping. She emphasizes the importance of digital platforms in disseminating information about skin cancer, reaching a wider audience and impacting more lives. Gabriella uses her platforms, such as Instagram and the podcast Café com Pintas on Spotify, to educate and inspire people about early detection and prevention of melanoma and other types of skin cancer.

The text also underscores the importance of self-assessment using the ABCDE rule to identify suspicious signs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border irregularities, Different colors, Diameter greater than 6mm, and Evolution. Dr. Gabriella encourages seeking a dermatologist for regular skin examinations.

Gabriella shares several cases that marked her journey, including diagnoses made in informal settings, showcasing how paying attention to moles is part of her mission. She also emphasizes how empathy and ethics are essential tools in her daily practice.

In addition to her professional mission, Gabriella values time spent with her family, emphasizing that the role of mother and caregiver is irreplaceable. She reflects on the importance of following her gifts and passions, using digital means to expand the sharing of knowledge and inspire others.

Finally, Gabriella encourages readers to be grateful for their daily experiences, appreciating both successes and challenges, and to detach from environments that do not allow their full potential to develop.
